Hi all.. Can you believe it’s October already?! This year is flying by faster than the Man of Steel & his sonic booms! Anyhow…

I’ve just been updating the custom orders page on my website, and wanted to share a few words.. After a really good conversation with my husband yesterday, I realised I am charging far too little for custom pieces.. I so want to be able to accommodate everyone, but the truth is, custom work takes 2-3 times as long as any other work – from designing (with options!), meeting clients, working out costs & quotes, and actually manufacturing – often trying something I’ve never done before! Anyhow, I’ve realised that I need to actually start charging for my time, or else it’s just not worth it for me to do :/

So – if you check out my website’s custom orders page, you can see a new pricing guide, with some minimum costs.. As you can see, I’m keeping custom name necklaces as low as possible, as these don’t take me long to provide a few font options – but for necklaces and rings, well, those have definitely gone up! I hope this doesn’t put too many people off – you will be getting absolutely awesome custom pieces if you order, but they will cost a little more..

So, I’ve had a couple of shops going on Etsy for a few years now. It took me a long time to figure it out, but as soon as FNB announced they would be working with Paypal, I jumped into action, and haven’t looked back since!

SBG Etsy Page 2013

Etsy is a wonderful platform for getting your items to an international market. You set up your shop, add photos, and the rest of the admin is done for you.. No having to set up websites with shopping carts etc! Obviously they charge you a small percentage of your sales for doing all this, but if you, like me, supply any shops wholesale, you’ll find that all the bank charges etc still work out with you earning more than your wholesale price 😉

As I said, I’ve been running my Etsy shops for a few years now, and one thing I really enjoy, is the customer interaction.. People can email you via Etsy with questions or comments, or even set up custom orders – I’ve actually done quite a lot of these, which has been really fun 🙂

Anyhow – because of the fact that I’ve been up and running for a while, I get a lot of people asking me questions about how to set up their shops, how to set up Paypal accounts etc.. So, I thought the easiest thing would be to share my knowledge via my blog.. I’m going to set up a series of posts explaining exactly how to do all of this, over the next few weeks. I will cover setting up your Etsy shop, some photography tips, how to work out shipping charges, and setting up Paypal (if you’re in South Africa, a FNB bank account is a pre-requisite, so I suggest you start there!) Also, you will need a credit card for both your Etsy shop & Paypal set up – just a heads up!

So, I hope I can share some wisdom, and get lots more South Africans up and running with their Etsy shops.. I’ll be honest, I don’t make enough to support myself full time just from Etsy, but it’s a definite bonus when I can withdraw some extra cash from Paypal every month! (Just remember to keep records for tax, or SARS will be upset with you!!) 😉 But Etsy is generally a lovely community, and I honestly love getting to send my jewellery all over the world!

Keep checking in, and expect the first post this week 🙂

So. It’s Wednesday. Hmmmm… Feeling a little “Bleh” today, as you can probably tell.. Mind you, I really shouldn’t complain.. Working for myself, I don’t have to sit in rush hour traffic, didn’t HAVE to be at the studio at 8.. Instead, here I am – 8.45am, and writing up a new blog post, while I wait for the kettle to boil! 🙂

Woke up this morning to monsoon-sounding rain – gotta say, I love this time of year in Durbs.. There’s a sweet smell in the air with all the rain – plus, it reminds me that Christmas is coming! I know I know –  you’re probably all groaning at the thought – but I’m a Christmas-aholic, and will soon be re-watching my collection of Christmassy dvds! (First up – Elf!)

Anyhow – enough rambling!

Yesterday, I updated my website – re-worked it slightly, and added new pics.. I also created a “custom orders” page – showing some of the cool custom work I’ve completed. Check it out here: http://www.starbrightgirl.com/custom%20orders.htm

I really want to focus on marketing my business as a custom manufacturing one.. This is the work I enjoy doing the most – I love the collaboration with the customer, and imagining cool ways to interpret what they want – and I think I have a pretty sweet portfolio so far! I also love that, because of the internet & email – I can work with customers all over the world – come on – you gotta admit, it’s pretty cool! 😉

Anyhow – had better run now.. Need to do some resin on heart pendant for my lovely cousin, then head to the studio to put in a hard days manual labour!! (My fingers might complain, but my heart just loves it!) Ooh – and that reminds me – must take my camera today to take some pics of the new studio..

Have a lovely Hmmmday all (I really don’t like the sound of “Humpday”! – so am going with this!) Love Megs xx

First of all – hi all – hope your last few weeks of public holidays have been awesome 🙂

For all Durban-based peoples – the I Heart Market is this Saturday, and I will be there with lovely new goodies! It’s just always worth it – great food (mmm – cupcakes AND macaroons now!), good tunes (via the Unit 11 DJs) – and a good time to be had. Oh, and did I mention, Sunday is Mother’s Day – hint hint people! 😉

Next up – yup – I have FINALLY updated my website! I think it’s looking quite spiffy now, with a background and everything (html is haaaard!) – let me know what you think!

And now – onto some new goodies – been working like a busy bee to get these ready for the market 🙂

These are just some of my new pretty things – so many more to come! Hope to see lots of you this Saturday 🙂 Love Megs xx

So, I haven’t blogged for a long while – for good reasons… Before Christmas I was insanely busy – had 3 Saturday markets (which were awesome, thanks to all supporters!), and had a load of custom orders,  but more on those later.. Then, I went away – on an amazing holiday to Germany, to visit my big brother, his wife, and her family, and travel around and play in the snow! And boy, did we play – in more snow than I’ve ever seen (I’m from Durban, I’d seen snow only once before!) – and this was up to our knees! Will share some pics soon 🙂

Anyhow – thought I’d share a few pics of some custom items I made up for people…

Ok, this was a present I made for my sister-in-law – simple domed & cutout initial heart pendant..

This is my version of the Irish Claddagh ring – a bit wider & chunkier than most, with a little extra added engraving 🙂

Possibly one of my favourite pieces yet – for a friend who doesn’t like conventional hearts 🙂 I took a heart tribal tattoo design, and converted it so it looked a little ribcagey (but still oblique), then added a little red crystal bead behind.. It’s preeeetty 😉

Then – onto the other headline news – had a lovely email from Mary at Etsy, saying that my Bunting Love necklace is featured on Kaboodle’s “This Years Hottest Valentine’s Day Jewellery”! I feel so honoured! So, I am a happy girl tonight.. 🙂 (My next big wish is to make it to the front page in Etsy, but all in good time!) Anyhow – check out a screengrab below, and click on it to see the other 14 featured items.. (I’m number 15 of 15!)

And that’s my news for now – some snowy pics to follow soon! Have a fantabulous weekend all – I need to get my nose back to the grindstone now! xx Megs

Hey everyone! Well, I’ve been doing lots of browsing around Etsy – and have come across some amazing things, and I thought I’d share some of them with you today..

For those of you who don’t know Etsy too well – it’s made up of 3 sections – hand-made, vintage and supplies – and I am way into the hand-made! 🙂

First up is my first Etsy purchase – it arrived yesterday, and I love it so much – great quality, and really great print.. Thanks, Rainbowswirlz!

Then, also from Rainbowswirlz, are these awesome canvas field bags – must get! (I mean, how cute is this one, come on?!!)

Next up – some of the awesomest earrings I’ve yet to see – these are hand-painted by Zachary Pryor – just incredible, don’t you think?!

Then we have loveandasandwich – Deon (my hubby) came across her work on Concept Art –  she makes these super-cool felt monster toys, but I am so loving these Spirited Away earrings:

Then, staying on a Miyazaki them, how cool are these vinyl stickers from LapTatt? (I want this for my car!) There’s a huge variety to choose from, and at really reasonable prices!

So these are just a few of the cool things I’ve come across so far (if you click on the pictures, they’ll take you to the appropriate Etsy shops 🙂 ) So this is me, highly recommending that you take some time to Browse Etsy – you might just be amazed at what you find 😀

Have a great weekend, everyone – hope to see lots of Durban peoples at the I Heart Market later.. Megan xx
